Catversations 8/15/10

I noticed that the birdbath looked a bit slimy so I went to change the water about 7 15 am. As I was wiping the algae off with a paper towel, I heard a series of soft meows behind me.

I turned and saw Chesterton strutting towards me. I asked if she wanted some breakfast.

Chesterton picked up her pace and scampered to the front porch where a small handful of dry cat food was waiting for her. As she ate, I finished with the birdbath and went inside to get her some milk as well as a some more cat food.

I sat the pie pan with a splattering of milk in it next to the food. However, Chesterton did not seem all that interested in the milk.

A few uneaten pieces of cat food really isn't anything to worry about. If worse came to worse, birds such as starlings could nibble up the leftovers. But I didn't want the milk to go to waste.

So to try and coax Chesterton into drinking the milk, I held the pie pan up to her mouth. Chesterton finished up the milk like a good little kitty.

Chesterton then trotted down the steps, thinking it was play time. Often after a meal, it is play time with a piece of string.

This day, however, it was somewhat rainy. I remained on the porch, protected from the light shower by the small overhang.

A bit disappointed, Chesterton retreated beneath a car parked across the street. I retreated into the sanctum of my domicile, still not yet having had my own breakfast.

I looked outside about 8:15 am. Chesterton was back, patiently sitting on the front porch.

I got Chesterton another handful of food and played a bit of string with her since by this time the rain had stopped. We played for awhile until Chesterton spotted a squirrel across the street.

Chesterton watched for a bit from the edge of the driveway. Hearing acorns hit the ground as they fell from the trees, Chesterton decided to investigate, likely concluding that the squirrel was somehow behind it all. I slipped back inside.

That was, though, not the last of Chesterton I would see that Sunday. Whenever I get home, I always give the back porch a look to see if the cat might be there or signs that it might have been as evidenced by the disappearance of the small amount of cat food I often leave placed there.

This time when I got home from church, Chesterton was curled up fast asleep in a position not unlike another cat whose first part of its name is "Ches" painted on the side of C&O Railway cars. I didn't have the heart to wake her and figured she was safer there than just about anywhere else.
